"Maus": the Holocaust Told Through a Comic Book

The author of "Maus" published between 1973 and 1991, is Art Spiegelman who has chosen this special tool to tell the Holocaust. The protagonist of "Maus"is the author's father, Vladek Spiegelman, a Polish jew who survived the Holocaust. What is particular in these cartoons is that men look like animals and are not designed as if all were the same: the Jews are mice and Nazis cats. Prey and predators.
Spiegelman puts in writing the shocking events that his father told him: the initial wealth, persecution,the imprisonment in the ghetto, deportation to Auschwitz. Here, separated by Anja, his wife, is preparing as thousands of mice to death. Vladek survived thanks to his cunning and a large dose of luck, although thousands of people each day died of starvation, typhus or were killed in gas chambers. The release and the return to "normal life" came when the U.S. and Russian armies defeated the Germans, but who comes from such an experience can never go back to a normal life, as if it never happened.
Maus tells the facts are very distressing but thanks to the originality of the comic, the reading is enjoyable. This history reveals the cruelty of the man who is sometimes able to treat his fellow man as a beast, if not worse, because there is nothing in the animal world that can act is such a ferocious way.
