Celtic New Year's Day Riolo Terme: In Romagna the passage from October to November was considered New Year’s Day in the past. The origin of this beginning of the calendar is Celtic (the same as the American Halloween night).

People thought that the dead came back to earth "to put everything back in its place" after the end of the productive agricultural cycle so that they could prepare for the next one.
During this night, Riolo re-enacts the rites, masks, ritual cookings, fires and culture of a very old past, where you may find some links with the pre-classical heathen rites. The aim of the feast was to exorcise every negative event which could disturb the peaceful community life and the propitiation of the future.
